Jakob Rutqvist
My name is Jakob Rutqvist; I’m 28 years old, convinced that the world is in a state of emergency and hope I can contribute to finding and implementing sustainable solutions. As long as I can remember, I’ve not been satisfied with simply observing and reflecting on policies that seem wrong, I’ve always wanted to find better alternatives and take part in implementing them. I’ve been engaged in entrepreneurial activities since the age of 16; including founding and running companies, starting an aid program, a newspaper, chairing a political youth organization, co-founding a platform for entrepreneurs as well as running many different projects. To use creativity, intellect, and teamwork to solve problems inspires me, and the one big problem I want to take part in solving during my life is the global sustainability challenge.
I’ve decided to concentrate on trying to understand how sustainability and economics can coexist and together with other people come up with innovative ideas for how to solve our sustainability problems in a cost effective and environmentally adequate way. I’m sure we can go green while at the same time fight poverty and build a hi-tech, bright, fun and comfortable future.
A key to success-I believe-is to understand how systems of innovation works, how to support them and how the deployment of new innovations (not only products but also processes and business models) changes the playing field, incentives and mental models. The world has never possessed such an amazing power to invent and innovate as it does today - but too much energy and money is spent on creating incremental innovations yielding incremental improvements, when we need radical innovation and radical thinking. This is not effective.
I know humanity now stands at a threshold concerning our planet; experts are indeed talking about a challenge that “may threaten humanity’s survival”. Decisions made today will cause enormous effects in the future and we all urgently need practical solutions and scientific models, balancing costs and benefits, to act upon and implement. Let’s get started - go invent, go implement!
